Creating a blog might seem like a challenging endeavor if you’re new to it (and not super tech savvy like me). I felt a little overwhelmed researching how to create a blog. Trust me when I say this, creating my own blog is one of the best decisions I have made. Writing and sharing posts to my audience makes me feel so happy. Luckily it’s a creative outlet I didn’t even know I needed.
If you’re thinking of creating a blog, don’t fret! I’ve created a step by step guide to help you create a blog of your own! I want to note that I briefly mention free ways to blogging. However, what I describe below does cost money. If you want to take a more serious approach to blogging, perhaps one that earns some passive income, you will want to follow this guide. Whatever you decide, as long as you’re having fun, there’s no wrong way to blog!
With that being said… here’s the guide!

Step One: Deciding on a Platform
It seems like there are so many different platforms out there. So how do you choose? Ultimately you have to decide which route you’re going for, free or paid. A lot of free sites (Blogger, WordPress.com) are great, but usually come with drawbacks. For an example, WordPress.com will place ads on your site. So if you want to have total control of the content on your blog, I would recommend others. WPBeginner has a great guide to blogging platforms.
I personally chose WordPress.org so I have control over my content (and no ads that I don’t approve of). When I first got started, I made the mistake of originally creating a wordpress.com site on accident. Oops! However, after contacting WordPress, they helped me transition to a wordpress.org site. I can’t recommend their support staff enough! Never feel embarrassed or shy about reaching out for support. There’s tons of people who would be willing to help!
Step Two: Hosting and Domain Name
Now that you have an idea of where to have your blog, you need to think about hosting it. This is where all of your blog information is stored in a server where everyone can see it! I use Bluehost. I read tons of reviews and thought I would give Bluehost a shot and I have not been disappointed.
If you decide to use Bluehost, you will go to their website and click “get started now.” From there you will have a few options. By using my referral link, you get a discount on all packages. Here they are below! Plus, a domain name is included in the price! You will have the option to choose between 12, 24, or 36 months of hosting. Here are the three plans they offer.
Picking a domain name is probably the hardest thing about creating a blog (or at least it was for me). Do you already have some ideas but are unsure if they are taken? Try this:
After you complete the signup and create a secure password, you will login to your Bluehost site to install WordPress.
Bluehost will redirect you to a new website, this is where you will install WordPress. You will provide the domain name you are installing WordPress for, accept the terms and conditions, and install! Make sure you write down all the information they provide you (URL, Admin URL, username, password). Enter the Admin URL into your browser and log into WordPress! This is where the fun begins!
Design your Website!
This is where you let your creativity shine! You can choose a free theme or pay for one. The choices are endless! Change fonts, colors, and add content! You can do all this “behind the scenes” and wait until you’re ready to launch your blog! Congrats on becoming a blog owner!
